Mourning the Passing of Brother Terry Hicks

The death of Terry Hicks is a loss for all who believe in workers’ rights. Out labor movement has lost a tireless champion with his passing. On behalf of the union men and women of the Wisconsin AFL-CIO, I would like to offer our deepest condolences to his wife Mary, children Amy and Terry, and the rest of the Hicks family.

Brother Hicks’ life was a testament to the power of solidarity. After service our country as a member of the US Army, he spent the rest of his working life as a proud union member. His belief in the fundamental values of our labor movement prompted him to assume a leadership role as the longest-servicing president of the Western Wisconsin AFL-CIO. (16 years+)

Getting the union message out was a lifelong priority for Brother Hicks. In his nearly three decades as Editor-in-Chief of The Union Herald, he helped his community put the new of the day into a worker-centric context. The book he authored, La Crosse Laborers, was in his words, “a modest effort to record the role unionism played in helping to create the economic growth and prosperity that led to the development of our communities.”

Brother Hicks has reached the end of his labors, but the values he exemplified live on. May he rest in peace as we carry on in solidarity.
